Accountant

The Accountant provides technical, administrative, and supervisory services in financial management by managing all accounting transactions, reconciliations, reporting, period end closing and organization of financial documents and records. The Accountant is required to liaise, with internal and external stakeholders, as required, to resolve matters impacting the organization's financial affairs.

The Accountant must comply with company policies and procedures and is expected to exercise strong initiative, managerial capabilities, flexibility and good stakeholder relations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage all accounting transactions and effectively plan, and execute monthly, quarterly, and annual closing of Finance Department’s work programme.
  • Maintain and update the accounting system to manage the operations, including bookkeeping, reconciliations, preparation of the periodic unaudited financial statement, and financial reports .
  • Prepare, check and post all journals timely to ensure no omission and distortion of the financial statements.
  • Prepare reconciliation of all the balance sheet accounts every month, including receivables, and resolve / reconcile items within 30 days.
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for all bank accounts and review petty cash reconciliations.
  • Prepare interim monthly reports for Senior Management Team.
  • Manage any intercompany recharges eg. IT, regional costs.
  • Manage Payroll system and process staff payroll twice monthly to meet the due dates of the 15th and 30th (February 28).
  • Generate and maintain required associated reports (NIS, PAYE, etc.) and prepare TD4’s for employees by February 28.
  • Prepare and monitor weekly cash flow forecasts, and advise of any risks to Senior Management and Financial Controller for mitigation.
  • Compute the quarterly tax payments in a timely manner to avoid penalties and interest charges.
  • Prepare and file VAT returns every 2 months and file Annual Return within 30 days of anniversary date of incorporation.
  • Attend BIR, VAT Office, Companies Registry, NIBTT and other government office to transact operational and compliance matters.
  • Work with department heads to obtain information to prepare the annual budget and forecasts throughout the year.
  • Maintain all supporting documentation for annual audit and prepare audit schedules.
  • Liaise with the internal/external auditors to have financial statements audited and follow up on any audit queries/management letters with a view of resolving them within established timelines. Ensure that annual audit is completed by May the following year.
  • Recommend and implement enhancement of internal controls.
  • Report any internal financial shortcomings and irregularities to Senior Management and the Financial Controller.
  • Maintain financial, operational and corporate records and data to ensure security, accessibility, and compliance with laws /regulations.
  • Update and keep current the Asset Register and maintain it in keeping with accounting standards.
  • Ensure the company vehicles are routinely maintained and the Vehicle Inspections are always valid.
  • Manage all company insurances locally and globally to ensure continuous coverage including for assets.
  • Keep abreast of changes in financial regulations and legislation and ensure the accounting staff is updated on new developments.
  • Assess the work performance of subordinate staff in accordance with Company policies/procedures.
  • Assist in the development of departmental goals and objectives and provide technical advice and expertise where necessary.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by Senior Management and Financial Controller.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • Professional qualification in accounting or financial management, registered and attained the final qualification of an accounting or financial management recognized professional body, e.g., CIPFA IPFM, ACCA, CPA .
  • At least 5 years of experience in accounting, or financial management.
  • Experience in the construction sector
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Working knowledge of accounting principles, practices and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS.)
  • Excellent time management with strong planning and organization skills and ability to work independently.
